Here is a book written about an amazing Peace Corps volunteer named Nancy Coutu, from Hudson, NH, who willingly joined the team of people dedicated to helping other people in the undeveloped country of Madagascar, in this case, to aid in their agricultural problems and to assist in repairing their environmental corrosion issues of the land that had been brought on due to the burning of the rainforests. She joined in the year 1994 with nervous excitement and worked within a small village called Bereketa. This is a community of 350 natives that lived without running water or electricity and had no school because a cyclone had demolished it, she taught them what she knew about caring for their environment and healthier ways of using their water, she helped to rebuild the villages' school. Then a tragic event occurred taking Nancy's life. This book is a compilation put together by her mother from Nancy's journals and the letters that Nancy wrote to her friends and family while living there. One can get a personal look at Nancy's adventures through her eyes to a very different world of cultural differences and experiences. |
